The vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center that Ebadi founded, Mohammadi has called for mass feminist civil disobedience in protest of Iran’s chastity laws and mandatory hijab. In 2016, she was sentenced to 16 years in prison under the charge of running an illegal splinter protest group. Released in 2020 she was sent back to prison in 2021, where she reported enduring abuses and solitary confinement. In December, 2024, she was granted a temporary release for medical treatment. 


In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
